Livelihood and Skilling - Sewa International

LIVELIHOOD AND SKILL DEVELOPMENT

Empowering Youth. Building Futures.

It is aptly said that 'It is possible to fly without motors, but not without knowledge and skill'. Skill development is a proven enabling agent to get closer to employability or to become an entrepreneur. Aligned with UN Sustainable Development Goal 8 emphasizing 'Decent Work and Economic Growth', we understand how knowledge & skill development is vital for human advancement and economic prosperity.

Our Vision

Sewa International very well understands the power of education & skill development. Therefore, our efforts in this direction envision to empower the youth and make them future ready.

Our efforts towards skill development include empowering women by providing them hands-on training in Knitting and Ringal handicrafts (bamboo craft) in Uttarakhand. After the Bhuj earthquake, we started training and empowering Kutch women to become self-reliant through their embroidery and stitching work. In keeping with new age market trends, we began our journey with Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Kendra (PMKK) and PMKVY centers, to provide industry specific skill-based training in various job roles in Uttarakhand and West Bengal. When we started our project in Tripura, Bamboo furniture/handicraft making workshop for young tribal boys was very popular. Later on, we delivered training in tailoring for women folks implemented under PMKVY scheme.

Major Interventions in Skill Development

  • PMKVY (Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana) – Since 2016, we train youth to enhance their skills and make them employment-ready. Our PMKK centres across Uttarakhand and West Bengal provide training in hospitality, IT/ITES, apparel, food processing, agriculture etc. We have trained more than 9,000 youth across all skill development programs.
  • Entrepreneurship Training – We focus on local art/handicraft and reviving traditional professions. We've discovered knitting and ringal (bamboo handicraft) artisans in Uttarakhand and bamboo furniture artisans in Tripura, honing their skills to match current market trends.
  • Digital Literacy (Sewa Yuva Jyoti) – Our digital literacy centres empower youth to become digital workforce. We run various basic computer courses including coding and accounting skills at 10 centres in Uttarakhand and 3 in Tripura.
  • Sewa Mahila Jyoti – In Uttarakhand, we focus on Knitting and Ringal Handicrafts, conducting design & training workshops and bringing articles to various exhibitions so that these women artisans become self-reliant and inspire others.
  • SIDDC (Sewa International Design & Development Centre) – Setup as a rehabilitation program after 2001 Bhuj earthquake to identify and motivate poor women in rural areas. Provides capacity building workshops, training cum exhibitions and financial assistance through bank linkages.
