Status Report

Rehabilitation work:
As everyone knows, the volunteers of Sewa Bharti, Gujarat, instantly swung into action after the tremors, rocking the whole of Gujarat on 26th January 2001, and started rescue and relief operations. R.S.S. branches all over India mobilized resources - both monetary and human - and directed them to Gujarat to help their fellow volunteers in discharging their Duties efficiently.

Dr. Hedgewar Rugnalay, at Bhachau treated 500 OPD patients daily and performed on an average of 10 operations a day, till date. But that was not all.
Sewa Bharti Gujarat decided to plunge into rehabilitation work - an uphill task - also in a big way and therefore, decided to reconstruct (A) Following is the brief status report of the rehabilitation project.
  1. 4 bordering villages in Bhuj Taluka with Hindu minority community, who wanted to migrate to safer places have been provided with 'Bhungas' a traditional Kutchi home for 14 families. 36 more homes are under construction.
  2. 14 shops were built and handed over in Bhachau for people to commence their daily consumption and shopping activity.
  3. Approx. 1000 volunteers from neighboring states, majority women, have moved to about 50 villages to boost up victim families for social reconstruction.
(B) Village reconstruction:
Sewa Bharti Gujarat, had identified all the 25 villages it proposed to reconstruct, out of which work in 4 villages is already started.

The process of finalizing the villages from the stage of identification, involves various stages, which consumes a lot of time. The village should first be agreeable to get the reconstruction work done through Sewa Brahma Gujarat. Sewa Bharti has so far obtained the said concurrence for 19 villages. The procedure for handing over the land to Sewa Bharti is complete in 8 cases as on 20.5.2001 and is in process in 11 villages. Sewa Bharti has such information ready for 19 villages. Sewa Bharti has been able to complete uptill now village layout plans for 8 villages. We are really proud of the fact that we have been able to satisfy the needs and requirements of the villagers and they have happily approved the plans prepared by us.

The stages after this, though technical, are important and essential, These are
(a)Preparing and submitting to the government a project report for the village
(b)Getting the water and electricity supply arranged from the Government for construction work.
(c)Conducting land and contour survey and soil testing.

Sewa Bharti, in lieu of above also decided to take up few villages which can not be completely relocated, however several families (say 50%) are ready to shift and also make partial contribution for resettlement. That is without any Government assistance to Sewa Bharti, we shall rehabilitate them.

The reconstruction of the villages , Mayapur (District :Surendranagar) and Devgadh (District: Rajkot) is already started. Sewa Bharti is handling these projects, in association with Rashtra Sevika Samiti (An all India womens organisation) and Government of Goa respectively.

We have now established three project offices, one each at Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Radhanpur and Gandhidham to plan and monitor the rehabilitation activity.
