EARTH QUAKE IN GUJARAT.

New Delhi, March 9, 2001
An Appeal for Donations
One of the worst earthquakes in the history of our country took place in Gujarat on the 26th Jan 2001, practically destroying number of vilages in Kutchh Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surendranagar and Ahmedabad districts. More than 20,000 people are feared to have died and few thousands are buried under the debris of the collapse buildings.

"Sewa Bharati, Gujarat" in coordination with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was active in the rescue and relief work from day one 27000 swayamsevaks had been at work 724 doctors were teamwise working at different places. They have performed 2400 operations and treated over 59516 patients. 1272 persons have been rescued alive whereas 7280 bodies have been cremated.

Still the tremors of earthquake are continued, shaking the earth as well as the minds of the people in shock, after the devastating earthquake. Efforts are required to make the people's minds normal "Sewa Bharati, Guajrat" through its wide spread network have already started mental rehabilitation centres, at more than 50 places in entire quake affected area. About 500 men and women volunteers are working in this scheme who give mental relief to the affected by engaging them in games, songs, story narrating, bhajans, Prabhat Pheri and other recreation activities. The response to this program is unbelievably heartening.

The town of Bhachau in Kutch, which also is a taluka centre, is totally collapsed with no building standing erect. "Sewa Bharati, Gujarat" decided to open a full fledged semi permanent "Tent-Hospital" at Bhachau which can fetch patients from 70 villages surrounding it. With the cooperation of National Medicos Organisation (NMO) and U.N. Mehta charitable trust (Torrent Group) Dr. Hedgewar Hospital was inaugurated on March 2nd 2001 at the hand of Shri M.G. Vaidya, member, national executive council and spokesperson of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The Hospital is well equipped with three air conditioned operation theatres, X-ray unit, pathological laboratory and is assisted by a team of specialised doctors. The Hospital is in full action from the day one and was blessed by a mother delivering a female child while inauguration program was going on. From the next day, average 500 patients were attended by the medical team, daily.

Now the major task is to rehabilitate the shattered villages and people. One of the worst earthquake in the history of our country took place in Gujarat on the 26th January 2001, practically destroying a number of villages in Kutchh, Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surenderanagar and Ahmedabad districts. More than 30,000 people are feared to have died and few thousands had buried under the debris of the collapse buildings.

"Sewa Bharati, Gujarat" in coordination with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh is active in the relief. The rehabilitation work from day one, 25000 swayamsevaks have been at work, 600 doctors are teamwise working at different places. They have performed 1000 operations and treated over 19000 patients. 1200 persons have been rescued alive where as 5000 bodies have been cremated.

Future Plans:

A number of children who have lost their parents or at least one of them need to be rehabiliated. Similarly many old men and women are rendered distitute. An orphanage for these children and an oldage home for the old are to be set up.

Number of severely affected villages will be adopted for overall development and complete rehabilitation work through our various organisations. It is bt natural that on humanitarian grounds, you will have your sympathy towards those who have lost not only their house and property but also lives of their family members. Materials most needed for rescue and rehabilitation are mostly available locally but huge finances are necessary to meet the demand.

It is an earnest appeal to send liberal donations towards this cause.

The worst ever earthquake has devastated the state of Gujarat killing more than 20,000 people, especially in Bhuj town and surrounding villages and towns. According to latest estimates more than 30,000 people have been killed. Bhuj, Bhachau, Anjar, Morvi, Jamnagar are the worst affected areas. In the town of Bhachau not a single house is standing. Thousands of families have been devastated. Drinking water and Power Supply have failed in most of the towns. The houses that have stood the earthquake are not fit enough to live in.

More than a few thousand RSS swayamsevaks have plunged themselves to serve the affected. Swayamsevaks are busy clearing the rubble and trying to pull out the live or the dead bodies. Medical Vans with teams of Doctors, food distribution, drinking warter supply, providing clothes and blankets and helping the military and police personnel, are the main activities undertaken. The primary need of the residents of the affected area is a temporary shelter and tarpaulins are being distributed. Vishwa Hindu Parishad is also involved in a big way to provide succour to the affected. VHP has launched three makeshift hospitals in Bhuj, Anjar, and Bhachau. Medicines worth Rs. 3,00,000/- are being distributed through these hospitals every day.
