Another devastating earthquake struck just before dawn Saturday 28th May 2006, about 15 miles (25 kilometers) south-southwest of Yogyakarta, near the volcano Mount Merapi. Most of the fatalities occurred in the Bantul district just south of
Till this date, it is reported that more than 5400 people have been killed while the search for bodies is yet in progress.
Many people were sleeping and were entombed in their bedrooms. Around 200,000 survivors were left homeless and many took refuge in makeshift tent in cities. More than 20000 people have been injured and are being treated in the makeshift clinics by rescue teams.
